The Foundation Programme at British Management University is designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation, preparing them for success in their chosen fields. Throughout Year 1, students will explore a diverse range of subject areas that are essential for both personal and professional growth.

NOTE 1: Depending on their speciality, students may have a choice between Introduction to IT for Business II and Global Issues in the Spring semester of their Foundation programme.

NOTE 2: Graduates who successfully complete the Foundation year can continue their studies in one of the Bachelor’s programmes of the British Management University.

INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH I and II (2 SEMESTERS)toggle-icon

Students will develop their academic language skills and will prepare for studying in the bachelor’s programme in English by:

♦ developing academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills

♦ expanding their academic vocabulary and learning to follow academic conventions

♦ getting acquainted with different types of texts and genres of writing

♦ learning how to discuss and debate issues from different perspectives

♦ using preparation, goal setting, and reflection to accomplish more complex language tasks

ACADEMIC SKILLS I and II (2 SEMESTERS)toggle-icon

Students will gain a wide range of skills necessary for successful studies in an international university environment by:

♦ getting acquainted with academic culture, principles of research, and the structure of the learning process

♦ mastering the basic skills of critical and analytical thinking

♦ improving self-study skills, including time management and exam preparation

♦ developing essential skills of selecting and evaluating information, for academic research

♦ learning how to plan and complete an extended academic writing project

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT I and II (2 SEMESTERS)toggle-icon

Students will get acquainted with the main theories and concepts of business and management by: 

♦ gaining an understanding of business processes, the environment and core functions of business administration

♦ becoming familiar with the role of corporate governance and ethical issues faced by organizations and their employees

♦ learning how to find creative solutions to business problems, by drawing on the insights of both case studies and prominent works of theory

♦ practicing the skills needed to make decisions, quantify and manage information.

QUANTITATIVE METHODS IN BUSINESS I and II (2 SEMESTERS)toggle-icon

Students will gain basic knowledge of business mathematics and applied statistics.

♦ in the first part of the module, students will study some basic applications of algebra and calculus to solve real-life business problems

♦ in the second part of the module, students will get acquainted with basic concepts of probability and applied statistics

INTRODUCTION TO IT FOR BUSINESS I and II (2 SEMESTERS)toggle-icon

Students will develop the skills to use basic information technologies and applications to improve their personal and business efficiency. They will:

♦ learn the basic concepts of information technology and various applications to improve business performance • practice using the Microsoft Office applications (Word / Excel / PowerPoint)

♦ get acquainted with the basics of web design and programming languages (HTML and CSS) • master the key approaches to ensuring cybersecurity

GLOBAL ISSUES (1 SEMESTER)toggle-icon

Students will explore a range of issues that affect economic and social life in Central Asia and around the world by:

♦ getting acquainted with fundamental ideas about economic development and poverty, sustainability and environment, and aspects of social change

♦ form an understanding of how global forces affect business, economy, and society

♦ selecting and evaluating appropriate sources of information on these issues • considering a range of perspectives on these topics and practicing reading, discussing, and writing about them in an analytical and academic way
